Litote est un mot d'anglais, ce qui indique une figure de la parole qui est de diminuer le poids ou la gravité d'un certain fait au-delà des limites de la probabilité, dans une ironie ou pour créer un effet comique qui vient du paradoxe. Pas toujours une attitude d'evi fi cation est d'être considérée comme intentionnelle, voire très souvent, elle est totalement involontaire. "Dr Livingstone, je suppose?" En italien, l'euphémisme peut être traduit par une sous-estimation. Le terme a été introduit dans le paysage linguistique des études linguistiques cognitives. Il ne doit cependant pas être confondue avec la figure rhétorique de l'euphémisme étant donné l'utilisation d'un mot ou d'une paraphrase plutôt qu'un autre Hardest Word, afin de soulager la ou offensiveness la crudité de ce qui est dit.
