Nella chimica complessa (chimica organometallica, organica metallica e bioanalisi), un legante (legame Ligare = legame) indica un atomo o una molecola che coordina ad un ione metallico centrale attraverso un legame dative (legame coordinativo). Il legame di coordinazione è dovuto al carattere Lewis dei partner legati: i leganti sono basi di Lewis (donatori di coppia di elettroni) e gli ioni metallici sono acidi Lewis (accoppiatori di elettroni). La peculiarità del composto complesso e la differenza rispetto al legame covalente è che entrambi gli elettroni di legame sono forniti dal legante durante l'adesione coordinata: un ligando deve avere almeno una coppia di elettroni liberi (base di Lewis). Composti complessi sono per esempio il sale di sanguinamento del sangue rosso (potassium hexacyanide ferrate (III)) in cui lo ione ferro ferroso è circondato da sei ligandi, in questo caso ioni cianuro. Protoporfirina IX come legante per gli ioni di ferro in heme b.
