Un părinte adoptiv este unul care îngrijește și ridică urmașii părinților biologici, dar nu este, de fapt, biologic legat de copil. Copii fără părinți adoptivi pot fi crescuți de bunicii lor sau de alți membri ai familiei. Un părinte poate fi, de asemenea, elaborat ca un strămoș eliminat o generație.
