Grog - Rhum ou autre boisson forte, diluée avec de l'eau; Incluez le jus d'agrume, la cannelle, l'eau chaude ou le sucre pour améliorer le goût. Servi une fois aux marins sur des voiliers. La popularité du rhum au 17ème siècle a amené la Royal Navy à la journée, en 1655, la veille du remplacement des marins. Le remplacement de la bière faible et souvent surpeuplée par la moitié de l'épingle à l'alcool fort a eu un effet négatif sur la discipline et la performance des gens de mer. Afin d'empêcher le dégroupage, le vice-amiral Edward Vernon a ordonné que la ration de rhum soit mélangée à un quart d'eau le 21 août 1740. Il s'agissait d'éviter les "chomikings" chez les marins alcooliques, qui buvaient plus tard en même temps pour se saouler et les inciter à boire de l'eau. Mais plus important encore, le sucre et le jus de citron vert ont été ajoutés à ce rhum dilué. Les marins ont appelé un nouveau gant en l'honneur de l'amiral, qui portait le surnom de Old Grog à cause de sa ceinture inséparable cousue du grogram. Le Grog a contribué de manière significative à l'amélioration de la santé des gens de mer.

Pragnąc zapobiec rozprzężeniu, 21 sierpnia 1740 wiceadmirał Edward Vernon rozkazał podawać dotychczasową porcję rumu zmieszaną z kwartą wody. Miało to zapobiec "chomikowaniu" przez marynarzy alkoholu, wypijanego później w większej ilości naraz w celu upicia się, oraz skłonić ich do picia wody. Co jednak ważniejsze, do tak rozcieńczonego rumu dodawano cukru i soku z limonek. Marynarze nazwali nowy trunek grogiem na cześć admirała, który nosił przezwisko Old Grog ze względu na swój nieodłączny sztormiak uszyty z grogramu. Grog przyczynił się wydatnie do poprawy stanu zdrowia marynarzy.
