Un retransfer este o altarpiece încadrată, ridicată ușor deasupra spatelui altarului sau mesei de comuniune, pe care sunt așezate crucea, sfeșnici ceremoniali și alte ornamente. Utilizarea în exterior a termenului, așa cum este în limba franceză, este diferită, iar în cazul în care cuvântul este păstrat cu această aplicație străină, distincția trebuie respectată. Retropilumul latin medieval a fost aplicat unei trăsături arhitecturale amplasate în spatele unui altar și, în general, sub forma unui ecran care încadrează o fotografie, o lucrare sculptată sau sculptată în lemn sau piatră sau mozaic sau o caracteristică mobilă, cum ar fi Pala d'Oro din Bazilica Sf.
