La flottation est un processus de séparation physico-chimique pour les solides à grain fin en raison de la moissibilité de surface différente des particules. Ce faisant, on utilise le fait que les bulles de gaz peuvent facilement devenir hydrophobes, h. qui sont difficiles à mouiller par l'eau et qui donnent la flottabilité des particules afin qu'elles flottent. La condition préalable est que le gaz utilisé se dissout dans l'eau. Dans ces conditions, les mêmes bulles de gaz hydrophobes s'accumulent sur les surfaces de particules hydrophobes. La méthode est utilisée, par exemple, dans l'extraction afin de séparer le minerai et la gangue dans une bouillie aqueuse. Il a remplacé l'élimination traditionnelle des boues dans la plupart des domaines d'application. La flottation n'appartient pas aux processus de séparation en raison de la densité, comme on l'suppose souvent de manière erronée. Selon la définition selon le code d'unité VDMA 24430, il s'agit d'un processus de séparation dans lequel des substances dispersées ou suspendues dans l'eau sont transportées vers la surface de l'eau en adhérant aux bulles de gaz et en sont enlevées avec un dispositif de défrichage.

Dabei macht man sich zunutze, dass Gasblasen sich leicht an hydrophobe, d. h. durch Wasser schwer benetzbare Oberflächen anlagern und den Partikeln Auftrieb verleihen, so dass diese schwimmen. Voraussetzung ist, dass das verwendete Gas sich selbst schwer in Wasser löst. Unter diesen Bedingungen sammeln sich an den hydrophoben Partikeloberflächen die ebenfalls hydrophoben Gasblasen. Das Verfahren wird beispielsweise im Bergbau als Aufbereitungsverfahren eingesetzt, um Erze und Gangart in einer wässrigen Aufschlämmung zu trennen. Es hat in den meisten Anwendungsbereichen das traditionelle Abschlämmen abgelöst. Flotation gehört nicht, wie häufig irrtümlich angenommen, zu den Trennverfahren aufgrund der Dichte. Laut Definition gemäß VDMA-Einheitsblatt 24430 handelt es sich um ein Trennverfahren, bei dem in Wasser dispergierte oder suspendierte Stoffe durch anhaftende Gasblasen an die Wasseroberfläche transportiert und dort mit einer Räumeinrichtung entfernt werden.
