Flotația este un proces de separare fizico-chimică a solidelor cu granulație fină, datorită umectabilității particulare a particulelor. Procedând astfel, se utilizează faptul că bulele de gaz pot deveni cu ușurință hidrofobe, h. care sunt dificil de umezit de apă și care dau flotabilitatea particulelor astfel încât acestea să plutească. Condiția prealabilă este că gazul utilizat se dizolvă în apă. În aceste condiții, bulele de gaze hidrofobe se acumulează pe suprafețele de particule hidrofobe. Procesul este utilizat, de exemplu, în minerit pentru a separa minereul și gangul într-o suspensie apoasă. Acesta a înlocuit îndepărtarea tradițională a nămolurilor în majoritatea domeniilor de aplicare. Flotația nu aparține proceselor de separare datorate densității, așa cum se presupune adesea eronat. Conform definiției în conformitate cu codul unitar VDMA 24430, este un proces de separare în care substanțele dispersate sau suspendate în apă sunt transportate pe suprafața apei prin aderarea bulelor de gaz și sunt îndepărtate acolo cu un dispozitiv de curățare.
