Authoritarianism, in social relations, is a form of the exercise of authority that imposes the will of those who exercise power in the absence of a consensus built in a participatory manner, creating an oppressive social order and lacking freedom and autonomy. The pre-industrial society is marked by the imposition of a strong authority and hierarchy in all orders, with an undisputed masculine and paternal authority within the family, facing the increasing degrees of freedom and autonomy proper to industrial society and society post-industrial. In the individual psychological context, but also social, the authoritarian personality is defined. In education, the "authoritarian pedagogy", heteronomous or traditional, is defined as opposed to progressive pedagogy. In political science the concept of "authoritarianism" does not have a univocal definition, which allows to identify as authoritarian many and very different ideologies, movements and political regimes.

Autoritarismo, en las relaciones sociales, es una modalidad del ejercicio de la autoridad que impone la voluntad de quien ejerce el poder en ausencia de un consenso construido de forma participativa, originando un orden social opresivo y carente de libertad y autonomía. La sociedad preindustrial está marcada por la imposición de una fuerte autoridad y jerarquía en todos los órdenes, con una indiscutida autoridad masculina y paterna dentro de la familia, frente a los grados cada vez mayores de libertad y autonomía propios de la sociedad industrial y la sociedad postindustrial. En el contexto psicológico individual, pero también social, se define la personalidad autoritaria. En educación, se define la "pedagogía autoritaria", heterónoma o tradicional, frente a la pedagogía progresista. En ciencia política el concepto de "autoritarismo" no tiene una definición unívoca, lo que permite identificar como autoritarias muchas y muy diferentes ideologías, movimientos y regímenes políticos.
