Honor

Honor

Honor is a concept with various valences, as it is taken in a subjective sense or in its social meaning, as an element that comes into play in social relations in many civilizations. It implies personal acceptance and construction in the social imaginary, and even in the legal superstructure, of a moral quality linked to duty, to virtue, to merit, to heroism; Which transcends the family, offspring and sexual behavior; Which is reflected in opinion, fame or glory and in different ceremonies of public recognition; And which produces material rewards or dignities, such as charges, jobs, rents, estates, inheritances, etc. Specifically it fulfilled that function during a great period of the history of the western civilization, with previous concepts in classic Greco-Roman Antiquity and in the Germanic towns, arriving at a high codification from the conformation of feudalism of Western Europe in the Average Age. It remained operative in the societies of Old Regime while the nobility continued being dominant class in the society estamental.
