covenanter
The Covenanters formed an important religious and political movement in Scotland in the 17th century. From a religious point of view, this movement concentrated on promoting and developing Presbyterianism, and making it a form of government desired by the people, in opposition to the Episcopacy, which had the favors of the crown. From a political point of view, this movement saw important changes in the character and functioning of the Scottish Parliament, which began to gradually differentiate itself from its medieval origins. As a whole, this movement was essentially conservative in its tone, but it began a revolution which burned Scotland, England and Ireland, and which was called the wars of the Three Kingdoms. The Covenantary name comes from a covenant, which is a word of the old French, passed in the English medium, which originally meant convention, a thing agreed upon, and which designated, in English law, a formal agreement, a solemn promise. In Scotland, the term took the biblical meaning of "Alliance" or "Promise."
